Local design agency and advisors to Design for London, Designed By Good People, knew Penge and many of it's traders well and created a report on how best to use the funds available for Penge High Street. They gave the council various ideas but the job went to a large Architectural company instead who ignored the advice and did their own thing. The painted ghost signs and other ideas were shelved. They would be simple and inexpensive to do.

Re: Two Paris Beauties Under Wraps

Blimey, thanks Caroline, will make an amend with link to your page included.

Re: Two Paris Beauties Under Wraps

Temporary is a relative term, here: they've been covered since 2012 already - http://carolineld.blogspot....

Re: Fonts Inspired by Ghost (and other) Signs

Thanks, there are others inspired by signage too, including Gill Sans from a bookshop in Bristol, and Baby Teeth from a barber shop in Mexico.

Re: Lancell Road’s Mystery Ghost Sign

Line 8: Possibly (in an italic typeface with a high thick/thin contrast) a word starting with Local? I worked at Ashby's for 3-4 months in early '84 while on a 'Gap Year' and have fond memories of my brief stint there. It was still a 'real factory' full of characters. I did a week on the fourth floor using a hatchet to open tea chests, 26 of which at a time went down a chute to the first floor (I think) which was the tea floor - producing loose tea and teabags for, primarily, Gateway. Also all the flavoured teas per the tin below, masses of different flavours. There was a small shop on the ground floor open over lunchtime only if I recall. Coffee was the second or third floor, the offices and tasting area were on the other one. I seem to remember the warehouse manager was called Paul. Ashby's had been bought by General Foods shortly before I worked there and I believe it was all closed down and moved elsewhere as a result.

Re: For Hire: Stunning Reveal near Columbia Road Market

Update (July 2018), building restoration complete, photo here from Scott Robinson: https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

Re: James Ashby & Sons (Rose Brand Fine Teas)

Thanks Leah, would you be happy to scan the photo and share with me?
